Construction Work Regulated?
Construction for all other trades than Electrical are not regulated at the state level in Missouri.The Missouri Department of Transportation only prequalifies contractors to bid on highway projects as a Prime or a General contractor. Before a contractor is approved to bid, the contractor must be registered with the Missouri Secretary of State's office.

Requirements?
Electrical:What must be submitted to the Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors to seek Licensure:
• Completed application
• $200 license application fee made payable to the Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors. All Fees Are Non-Refundable
• Proof of education and/or experience in one of the following categories (See 20 CSR 2117-2 .010 Application for License for additional information or further below in instructions)-
• 12,000 verifiable practical hours installing equipment and associated wiring;
• 10,000 verifiable practical hours installing equipment and associated wiring and evidence of receipt of an electrical journeyman certificate from a United States Department of Labor-approved electrical apprenticeship program;
• 8,000 verifiable practical hours installing equipment and associated wiring and evidence, in the form of an original sealed or electronic transcript, of receipt of an associate's degree from a state-accredited program;
• 4,000 verifiable practical hours of supervising the installation of equipment and associated wiring and evidence, in the form of an original sealed or electronic transcript, of receipt of a qualified 4 year electrical engineering
degree;
• A copy of an electrical contractor or master electrician occupational or business license issued by any Missouri political subdivision held for 6 of the previous 8 calendar years that requires passing a standardized written
electrical assessment examination as an electrical contractor or master electrician based upon the National Electrical Code and that license is current, active and is not subject to discipline on the date of application.
The local license must be verified by the issuing licensing entity. Applicant's may use the office's Verification of Licensure form or may have in formation submitted on licensing entity stationary.
• Proof of successfully passing a division approved examination as an electrical contractor, master electrician or journeyman electrician. An examination previously passed could meet requirements. (See the listing on the office's
website under Examinations. This list will continue to be updated as examination approvals occur. This list includes information relating to how to schedule an examination and those approved.)
• A certificate of liability insurance of at least $500,000 issued by an insurance company authorized to engage in the business of insurance in Missouri. NOTE: If having such submitted by the insurance company, ensure the name
of the applicant with our office is included so not to delay the processing of an application.
Highway Prequalification:
Prime or General contractors intending to bid on highway projects must file a completed Contractor Questionnaire with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission. The questionnaire is valid for 12 months from the date the department receives the completed questionnaire. The processing time averages 2 weeks.
If a contractor has not done work for the department in the past 5 years and wants to bid on highway projects with an unlimited estimated cost, the contractor must complete a special Prequalification Contractor Questionnaire and the following must accompany the questionnaire:
a. A Certificate of Insurance;
b. A signed and notarized letter from the contractor's bonding company stating they will bond the contractor on projects costing in excess of $2 million;
c. A copy of the bonding company's latest audit or financial statement; and
d. A copy of the contractor's registration with the Missouri Secretary of State's office.
